What's in store for you

The Niyayu Canyon tour was rated one of the best in the Komi Republic at the International Tourism Forum and Exhibition KomiExpoTravel 2019. The main attraction of the route is a limestone canyon in the lower reaches of the Niyayu River. It is a protected natural area of Komi, as a large number of rare plants grow in the vicinity. The height of canyon walls can reach twenty metres in certain parts, while the length of the canyon is about five kilometres. It is of interest for water tourists because of its rapids (rank of complexity 2). The canyon has five large rapids, three of which consist of several steps.

The route starts in the mountains of the Polar Urals, near Lake Estoto. Tourists are transferred on all-terrain vehicles from Vorkuta or the former village of Polyarny. Tourists will hike from the parking lot near the lake to the observation peak 917 of the Maly Paypudynsky ridge. On a sunny day, a magnificent panorama of the Polar Urals in the southeast and east, and the Bolshezemelskaya tundra on the northwest opens for many kilometres around.

As part of the tour, our clients will also have the opportunity to see the life of reindeer herders, whose summer encampment is just below the lake, on the Estovis River. Upon arrival at the beginning of the canyon, we offer a sightseeing tour, with a mandatory inspection of the rapids and a photo session. The path of the sports running the rapids strongly depends on the amount of water in the river and shall be determined by the hike supervisor based on the inspection results. Also, if you are lucky, you can see the nests of Red List peregrine falcons on the rocks, while hiking in the canyon. In the first half of the route, on Estovis and Niyayu, fishing enthusiasts will have the opportunity to catch a trophy grayling. The route ends on the right bank of the Usa River, near the mouth of the Kechshor brook; from here, the tourists are transported from the route to Vorkuta.
